The confusion over what seafood is “safe” is real. Whether it’s questions about trawling (what is that?) or mercury or Alaskan versus California salmon, sourcing and cooking fish can feel daunting.
Over the course of the next year Slow Food East Bay aims to guide you toward resources that will help alleviate these concerns. Through gatherings both large (a Halibut Festival!) and small (learn how to pickle herring!) you’ll learn why knowing where your seafood comes from matters.
We’re kicking off this year of exploration on Tuesday May 21st, gathering in community for a KNOW FISH dinner® at 25 Lusk in San Francisco. Chef Matthew Dolan and his team will be cooking an incredible meal of four courses of locally sourced, seasonal and sustainable fish paired with locally sourced and sustainable wines.
This will be your chance to hear the story of the seafood you’re eating directly from the harvester who caught it or the fishmonger who sourced it directly from the producer. You’ll hear the real truth about local fisheries and ocean systems from Sea Forager Kirk Lombard, ardent advocate for transparency Kenny Belov from TwoxSea and “Senior Science Geek” Gary Fleener of Hog Island Oysters. Expect talk of climate change, problematic policies and the challenge of cheap imports. And they’ll share the compelling reasons why we need to pay more attention to this great ocean system to our west and ask more pointed questions of our fishmongers and food purveyors
Slow Fish North America Oversight Team members Kelly Collins-Geiser and Jacquelyn Ross will host the evening, sharing the story of Slow Fish’s mission and values. KNOW FISH dinners and Slow Fish Rising Tide are a partnership of Slow Fish North America and Slow Food USA.
